Meet MIT's Team Physician: Is there a doctor in the house?

Dr. Kevin Heaton joined the MIT Sport Medicine staff in the fall of 2010 as the Sports Medicine Fellow.  Dr. Heaton completed his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of New Hampshire in 2001, and completed the University of New England College Of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine in 2007.  Dr. Heaton went on to complete his residency in Family Medicine at Boston Medical Center with medical interests including sports medicine and manipulative therapy.

In the short time Dr. Heaton has been with us, he has helped provide medical coverage for our home football contests, has run clinical in-service sessions with our staff of athletic trainers, and has seen over 100 of our student-athletes here in the MIT Sports Medicine Clinic during the fall semester.  Under the expert supervision of Dr. Shawn Ferullo, Dr. Heaton provides excellent medical service to our student-athletes while broadening his exposure to athletic medicine.

MIT Medical, DAPER, and Boston Medical Center are in their 6th year of collaboration to provide this exemplary care to our student-athletes. Previous Sports Medicine Fellows to occupy this role include: Dr. Aguilar, Dr. Hyden, Dr. Chawla, and Dr. Kreher.  Last year’s fellow, Dr. Arturo Aguilar is currently practicing at BU Student Health and is the team physician for Emerson College.  Dr. John Hyden, the Fellow from 2008-2009 is currently practicing at the Campbell Clinic and is the team physician for the University of Memphis athletics.  Dr. Veena Chawla, with us in 2007-2008, is currently a physician at Georgetown University and provides sports medicine service for the schools competitive and recreational athletes.  Finally, Dr. Jeffrey Kreher, with us during the 2006-2007 academic year, is practicing sports medicine just up the street at the Cambridge Health Alliance.

Technology Tip - voicemail

CLEARING THE VOICEMAIL BOX
Recently I wanted to listen to an older message that I had saved in voice mail.  I was quite surprised to hear that I had 88 messages in my inbox.  With the old system we would fill voice mailboxes with only about twenty but now the box is limitless.  I immediately called the help desk and asked if there was a way to get rid of all the messages at once.  The answer was no. The other part of the answer was that it would probably take about 4 or 5 trips to my mailbox because voice mail will hang up after so much time.

Like many of you I receive voice mail in email so I can go back through the email mailbox that I filter my voice mail messages to and find the one I am looking for but it still bothers me that I have that many messages.   What if I was away from my email and wanted to get some information from the last message I just received.  The saved messages start with the first one you got so in my case I would have to skip past 87 messages to get to the last one I just heard.

Deleting the email version of the voice mail will not erase them from your voice mail.  The website that can be used to manage your phone and messages will not let you erase all the messages at once so your only option is to delete them one at a time.

Connect to voice mail and log in and press 1 to hear your old messages, after you listen to new ones.  As the woman says “next message” hit the 7 key on the phone which deletes the message.  Do this for about 20 messages per call.

Now remember if you receive your voice mail messages through email you probably don’t want to go through this because you can look up a message in email.  If you do not receive your voice mail via email let me know and we will take steps to see that you receive them via email.

MIT at White Mountains through Extreme PE!

As the MIT trip coordinator, one of the best things about facilitating the backpacking/hiking PE course in the White Mountains is seeing a group of MIT students relax as they leave campus. On the trip, students see remote wilderness and leaving their P sets on campus.

Meeting at 8am on a Saturday morning at the Z Center is always a sleepy, inauspicious beginning to what always ends up being a group of friends. After the 3 hour drive, we arrive at the AMC Highland Center (Bretton Woods, NH) and meet our guides. The guides provide expertise on all things outdoors (gear, hypothermia prevention, flora and fauna, and much more. They are also team building pros. Our guides, Mike and Kat, lead us through a series of activities to learn and remember each others’ names. Then we moved on to serious team building – which involved throwing stuffed animals at each other while blind-folded. This was mentioned as a highlight in almost every student’s feedback on the trip. Mike and Kat had also hiked the Appalachian Trail and, while we were hiking, several students quizzed them on the logistics of such a long hike. Perhaps, someday, one of our backpacking alumni will hike the Georgia to Maine Trail as well. We also had the opportunity to hear an expert on Moose who had earrings and tie tacks made from dried out moose poop. Apparently, one moose typically has 35,000 ticks on it at a given time. Very interesting stuff.

The Physical Education Backpacking and Hiking course is three days and two nights, we typically hike 12 miles and 2400 ft. elevation). On the October 2010 trip (the trip is offered Columbus Day weekend and Patriot’s Day weekend), we had a group that included four freshmen and two “non-traditional” students. The latter two students had started at MIT in ‘90s and then spent the intervening time in the workplace. Both had decided to come back to finish their undergraduate degrees (independent of each other – they were strangers before the trip). The returning students were often amazed at how much MIT culture and mythology the first year students had picked up in a matter of weeks. The idea that sleep and eating healthfully is a luxury that few have time for was a theme that came up repeatedly. On this trip, however, students usually get more sleep then they have since school started in August. When we are at the remote (and off the grid) Zealand Hut, lights go out early to conserve energy. On this trip, the lights went out at 8:30pm to set the atmosphere for telling White Mountains ghost stories – a big, creepy hit with the 35 hut residents that night. After going outside to see the breath-taking view of the stars and playing a few hands of cards, almost everyone was asleep by 10pm.

As part of our MIT package, AMC provides us with all the gear needed to go on a two- day hiking trip – backpacks, sleeping bags, fleeces, rain gear, and boots. We have to remember to bring socks, but the AMC gear room allows our students to try out backpacking without purchasing expensive gear. Without exception, every student seems to discover that they love hiking and being outdoors. A student wrote in the journal assignment “I enjoyed the hiking and relaxing environment of the Highland Center and Zealand Hut, even though I had a lab report due that Tuesday.” Their curiosity about their surroundings, nature and science find outlets on this trip. “I learned how to navigate using the sun and (I learned) advanced map and compass skills,” wrote another student. We were lucky that we had absolutely amazing weather on the October trip allowing the group to summit Mount Tom (elevation 4,051 feet). The amazing view of the Presidential Range and Pemigewasset Wilderness (see photo) is something all participants mentioned as a highlight.

You can take an MIT student out of MIT but you cannot take MIT out of the students – they never lose that burning curiosity and drive to find out more. Part of the curriculum of the course includes a seminar on wind power in New England. This session is delivered by a scientist who works with the research division of (our hosts) the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). At the formal end of the talk, several students asked if they could stay after to talk to the researcher and be late for dinner. I agreed, thinking I would see them in 3-5 minutes. Twenty-five minutes into dinner, there was no sign of the stragglers and I had to go and tear them away from discussing wind power to remind them that dinner awaited (and their colleagues were starting dessert). This course gives students exposure to a challenging physical activity while fostering their understanding of the real-life applications of science. Taking the students away from campus highlights the curiosity and appreciation of complexity that makes MIT such an amazing place.

Men's Ice Hockey Update

ALUMNI FUNDRAISER: BRUINS vs. MIT
On January 29th the MIT Men's Ice Hockey Club held its second annual Boston Bruins Alumni vs. MIT Men's Ice Hockey Alumni fundraiser. NHL Hall of Famers and legends Rick Middleton, Terry O'Reilly, Reggie Lemelin, and Ken Hodge faced off against MIT Engineers from the class of 2011 all the way back to the class of 1966. Attracting fans from the MIT and Cambridge communities, the event was once again a great success. The event represents the Men's Ice Hockey Club's primary fundraiser for the year and helps support the team and connect current and past players. Despite the talent of MIT's multi-generational team, the Bruins Alumni won by a score of 11-9. The MIT Men's Ice Hockey Club thanks the MIT community and their generous alumni for supporting the event and the hockey program this year.

NEW COACH: DAVE HUNTER
This summer MIT's coach of 13 years, Mark O'Meara, chose to part ways with the Institute and move on to a new head coaching job at Endicott College. The team was left to find a new coach for the 2010-2011 season. After soliciting and receiving applications from many eligible candidates, the team decided upon one who stood out above the rest. Dave Hunter grew up in St. Catharine's, Ontario, playing Junior B hockey there before moving on to play at Cornell University. Dave played on the varsity team at Cornell for four years with the likes of current Cornell head coach Mike Schaefer and NHL star Joe Nieuwendyk. After graduating from Cornell in 1986, Dave moved with his future wife to Reading, Massachusetts. Starting in 1997, Dave had been an assistant coach for the Reading Memorial High School, which became the first public high school to win the prestigious Super 8 tournament in 2008 and has produced a number of Division I players. He has also been a coach in Reading Youth Hockey the last 13 years as well as a partner in the PowerEdge hockey school, which teaches hockey skills for various youth programs throughout the season and hosts an annual summer hockey school. Since 2008, Dave has worked as a professional hockey scout for the Carolina Hurricanes, responsible for assessing Draft Eligible players in Prep School and Junior Hockey in New England. The team looks forward to a promising new era under Coach Hunter.

PLAYER PROFILE: MIKE ROSENWEIG
Mike Rosensweig is a senior forward, wearing number 15 for the Engineers. He hails from West Hartford, CT, is studying Computer Science here at MIT and is a brother of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Last fall, shortly before the beginning of the school year, Mike, already very skinny, was having trouble eating and was losing weight. Then, his glands began swelling up and he started coughing up blood. Mike visited MIT Medical and was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital where, after a couple of days running a number of tests, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Almost immediately, Mike began chemotherapy and with a compromised immune system, was left in almost solitary confinement. After the first and second rounds of chemo, things did not improve significantly and doctors determined that Mike would need a bone marrow transplant. In December, doctors performed an autologous transplant, where they took healthy bone marrow cells from Mike's own body and used them to replace the sick cells. The transplant proved to be a success as Mike's health quickly improved. Amazingly, after missing the fall semester at MIT, Mike was able to return to school in February, while periodically continuing chemotherapy. Upon returning to school, Mike was surprised by some of his fraternity brothers, including hockey team captain Bill Near G, who had adopted Mike's new hairstyle. This October, after a one year hiatus, Mike returned to the team. The team has greatly benefitted from his return, as they are off to a much-improved start this season. Over the Thanksgiving break, Mike received his last treatment of chemotherapy and, after a year and a half long bout with leukemia, life is practically back to normal.

Graduate Soccer Club Finishes 5th

The Graduate Club Soccer Team finished the 2010 season in 5th place in the highest division of the Bay State Soccer League. With the relegation of rivals Carico FC, MIT is now the only team to have played continuously in the top division since the league's inception. MIT also made it to the finals of the league's cup tournament, beating Groton House, Boyne Gunners, FC Americana, and Carico, before losing to champion Mass Premier Soccer. The team is now training in preparation for the start of the 2011 season in April.

Women's Rugby Building on Success

Riding off their championship win at Nationals last fall, the ladies of the MIT Women's Rugby Club have certainly kept the momentum of their organization going. Last spring, they took home 2nd place at the annual Beast of the East tournament. Equipped with quite a few new rookie players, the team had a great season this past fall. It ended the regular season with no losses, and finished as runner-up in the NERFU finals. The success of the team has also been complemented by many individual successes. Over the summer, senior players Caroline Hunting and Alyssa Baccarella were invited to participate in the USA 7s camp. They, along with alumna player Erika Granger, were also able to play at the U23 level during the summer months. Recently, sophomore player Marisa Jasso was invited to attend the USA U20s training camp.

This spring MIT Women's Rugby plans to raise the bar in establishing its presence both on the pitch and off. On the schedule for their spring season are bigger, more competitive teams, some of which typically play at higher divisions. Also, the team will be putting on a rugby class for Spark as a way of spreading its knowledge of the game to participating youths. Finally, on April 30th, MIT Women's Rugby will be holding its annual "Prom Dress Rugby Tournament." The team invites any and all female students to come dressed in their thrift store best and get down and dirty on the rugby pitch. It should be a blast!
